 "Broke after 2 weeks" 2010-06-14
By S. Tanaka (Honolulu, HI)
This projector was great for 2 weeks. Then trouble started. The projector will shut down after 50 to 80 minutes into the movie. The screen goes blank, the power button flashes and fan comes on full blast. If I leave it, the fan will stay on forever. If I power down and restart, the projector shuts down after 5 minutes or so. Some kind of overheating problem? I was extremely disappointed!

Contacted Vivitek and all they can do is to repair it. It's within the warranty period, so I won't have to pay for the repair. But I'll still have to pay $20 or so to ship it to them. Why do I have to pay anything for receiving a defective item? I'm already being inconvenienced with the hassel of having to return it. I guess that's how they handle warranty service.

The silver lining to all this is that Amazon replaced the defective projector for a new one. I didn't have to pay a cent, even for returning. They also shipped the new one to me right away, and didn't wait until I return the old one. Good job by Amazon! I was without a projector for only about 2 days.

 "Excellent sub $1k 1080p projector!!" 2010-02-25
By M. ALYAHRI
Let me get this straight to you. If you're trying to buy your first projector, just go buy it or watch it in action. You don't have to look at all the negativity surrounding this projector. I really was pushed away from this projector because of all these rainbow effect comments and I was leaning toward the Optoma H20 because of the 4 color segmant wheel which is supposed to be faster and produces less rainbow effect than the Vivitek H1080FD. But you have to know that This Vivitek projector has higher contrast than the optoma H20. That's what really matters to me. I'm glad I took the Vivitek route. I really can't say anything bad about the Optoma HD20 since I don't have it, but I can tell you that my Vivitek is amazing as my first ever projector and I'm totally satisfied with it.

I unboxed the projector and hooked it to my PS3 using HDMI cable and projected the image on a light yellow flat wall from about 6 feet away, from that distance and using the maximum zoom, you'll get around 80" diagonal picture. I played Call of Duty: Modern warfare 2 and the picture was excellent, I really forgot that I was projecting the image on a wall that is not fully white and the color of the picture seemed to be correct!!!.... I was afraid of being a rainbow effect guy, but that wasn't the case. I really didn't suffer or noticed any rainbow effect. only when I turn my head to the left or to the right fast, I kinda see some vertical lines of primary colors which I think is what people refere to as rainbow effect. I invited my 3 nephews to play MW2 on split screen mode. we played for 4 hours and no one complained from the rainbow effect or any headache. So there you have it, rainbow effect is either overrated or only few few people suffer from it.

Closing the rainbow effect chapter and moving on to the performance of the projector. I was expecting some lag or frame rate drop from this projector when playing fast paced games, but I really did not encounter any, the gameplay was as smooth as silk. The picture projected was vivid and crisp, although there are minimum adjustment to the picture quality from your projector, but you really aren't going to need them because the presets are very accurate, you still can play with the contrast, brightness and hue.

Ease of installation is an issue here, this projector is not flexible, it's not an expensive projector so you'd expect such features to be stripped out, there is no vertical or horizontal shift to the picture. That means you're going to need to install or place your projector in the middle of the intended projected image. That means if you're going to ceiling mount it, you have to get rid of whatever is hanging from your ceiling.

The only real drawback of this projector is the black levels, if you're picky and have the budget, this is not for you. But if you're just like me,, someone who's got his first projector, who's not too picky about the darkest black in his projected image, then you will not care about this at all, you'll just be amazed at the performance of this projector.

the noise was very low, I was sitting 3 feet away from this projector an I couldn't hear anything.

PROS: Vivid & crisp picture, quiet and very cheap.

CONS: black is kinda dark gray.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

I'm waiting for my 120" Elite screen to arrive and once I install it and ceilling mount my projector I'll be able to provide you with my feed back on a bigger projected image.

[UPDATE]

Just got my 120" screen installed!! The projector was able to fill the entire screen with a very bright picture.Watched a couple of blu ray movies and some SD videos. I wasn't expecting the SD feed to be viewable, but it was very good. Anyway, you don't want to consume your lamp watching SD videos,, this is a 1080p Projector, so you better not put alot of milage on your bulb watching SD videos on a 120" screen. Anyway, I was very happy with my projector and it has not let me down yet. Everything I expected from such price range for a projector was met. I love my little vivitek H1080FD.

 "Somewhere over the Rainbow" 2009-12-27
By Jonathan Cleary
If you are a newbie like me, go look up the rainbow effect for dlp sets. That is the problem here. Basically, this unit uses a 3x color wheel meaning that you can these rainbows all over the place in 1080p content. And frankly, aren't you here because you want 1080p?

This unit is better than the Optima H20 that you are likely also looking at in every way except what I just mentioned, but you're going to have to take that hit. I'm returning this unit now for the Optima. Such a shame. It was almost perfect.

"Flawed but otherwise great looking" 2009-12-23
By Manuel Peguero (new york)
The bad: I'm not 100% sure but when I connected a component video cable to my previous projector, a mitsubishi hc1000 720p I did NOT get redish horizontal lines going through the viewed image. Nor did I occasionally get distorted skin tones. However, i did experience this with the Vivitek. Again, this is only with the component video cable. I happen to think that for viewing a digital cable box, its' better to use component. In any case an HDMI cable is fantastic especially for viewing Blu-Ray or HD DVD. This issue with rainbow effect, is not as slight as they make it out to me. Maybe I'm one of those people who is more sensitive to it. My wife said she sees it too but only when she makes an effort to see it, like quickly removing her eyes from the screen. Any way the effect is definintely there and I've already surpassed more than 50 hours of viewing but I would otherwise exchange it for a projector that does not have this effect.

The Good; Other than these "flaws" Just pop in a blu-ray, especially one of the newer movies and prepare to be awed ! Between the luminance, the resolution and the color, It truly makes for a satisfying viewing experiance. I watched the movie The public Enemies on blu ray and it was like, true home theater experience if not better than at the movies. The Roku movies (to long to explain what this is but for those who have it, you know what I mean) in HD also look fantastic, but again only the newer movies blow you away. Older movies that have been converted to HD somehow and do not make as good an impact. In summary, take away the fault when viewing through a component video, take away the dreaded rainbow effect, and take away the fan noise (it's not overwhelming but it is noticable, I have mine cealing mounted so that helps a bit) and focus on the HD or Blue ray viewed movies, and this projector is to die for.

"It's like a netbook compared to a full size laptop" 2010-04-18
By Moe (Ft. Lauderdale FL)
Yes, this is basically a toy, but it's exactly what I expected. I just wanted something compact to show pictures and video from my iphone and still camera. My husband was interested in a projector that a friend had but that one cost $1,000. This is something fun that we will use once in a while. Whenever I take pictures or video of my nieces they want to see themselves immediately and this makes them feel like movie stars. Yes, the room does have to be dark and you might have to buy some additional cords, if you want something for business purposes then you need something more heavy duty and with more features. This projector like going to a drive in movie as opposed to a theater, the picture is always a little washed out. It also reminds me of trying to decide on a new laptop. If you want one that's very compact then you might have to carry an external DVD player with you sometimes depending on what you're doing and you give up memory and processor speed.

By Michaelangela (New York, NY, US)
The item itself is wonderful, but unfortunately it did not do what I needed to do! I wanted to project an iphone photo of a large drawing onto a canvas so that I could trace it in preparation for painting, but the projector would not project a still image. Too bad! I'm hoping the item will be modified to satisfy this need.

When I read what this little device was suppose to be capable of doing I was anxious to have one as I give little mini desktop presentations and I thought this would be perfect. However, I was very disappointed. For one thing the room has to be really dark for it to work. It is basically a toy to be used with the iphone. It doesn't even come close to living up to its claims.

 "Cineminimal not for laptops" 2010-01-23
By AndiBex
I would call this cineminimal. Like many others, I received this as a gift with the promise that it would work for a laptop. I saw that I needed to buy an adapter but it was not in stock so bought the one recommended by Grandtec[[ASIN:B001VUUXLE Grandtec Gez-1000 Pc-To-Video Ez]. WHile waiting I did connect my TV, though it took a bizarre assortment of cables I had rolling around the house. It worked OK, resolution video was fine once I pulled the plastic off the front... However, the adapter did not work well at all. I did receive a response from WOWEE after a few days but they said that all the cables I needed were in the Grandtec box which is completely not true. It really isn't worth going the extra mile to buy yet another cable!! Oh, the first one I received was non-functional but they replaced it quickly.

 "BenQ W1000" 2010-06-15
By Gymane Moody
I've owned this projector for a month and a half. It has worked flawlessly with no issues to speak of.

It's quieter than my Optoma HD65 with a much brighter and vivid picture.

With a little or a lot of patience you can tweak the color and image to what ever floats your boat.

The W1000 has terrific color and depth, along with sharpness I've come to really appreciate. This unit does use a 2 times speed color wheel. Those sensitive to RBE may want to look at the HD20 or Vivitek. A LCD projector could be your best bet if you're very sensitive to RBE. The great thing about amazon is the satisfaction guarantee.

This is a VERY bright projector! At the present time it is the brightest 1080P projector available under 3 grand.

This gives you more leeway for ambient light to be present in the room. You can eat at the dinner table and still enjoy your movie or show without trying to eat in the dark because your image is washed out by the ambient light.

I like the fact this unit has its own speaker. My nephew loves to play Xbox. We just plug the Xbox directly to the projector and off we go! Nothing like playing video games on a large screen. The speaker is plenty loud enough without disturbing others in the home.

I've spent many hours tweaking and calibrating the picture. Here's a few settings that may or may not help you.

I've found it to give me the best balance of color, brightness and contrast so far.

These are settings with the projector 14 ft from the screen with lens wide, lamp hrs of 216 and 120 inch Favi matte white high gain screen. Black levels and contrast will deepen as lamp ages. 100 hrs of burn-in will make a difference for the better in skin tones and black levels.

 "First Product From BenQ!" 2010-06-12
By EDZ VON D
I have to say that this product is simply amazing! out the box I was pleased with the picture quality and I had to do minimal tweeking to make it look "custom!" I quickly hooked up my Ps3 and played Season 20 of the Simpsons Disc 2, The HIGH DEF episodes and let me say that it just blew me away; granted I was projecting an image of about 90inches or so and the wall had minor imperfections. The brightness is acceptable and was perfectly watchabe with the lights on. I set the lamp mode to economy, and let me say that there is a slight difference in brightness, but that will net you another 1000 hours of life, granted it the lamp doesn't go before that! The look of the projector is elegant white leather texture and look just perfect! I do have one complain though, there is no lense cover, as we all know the lenses are rather fragile and prone to scratches. I am quite happy for my purchase!

"Best projector I have owned yet!!" 2010-06-08
By Joseph Miller (Davisburg, MI)
This projector I am using right now I have my computer hooked up to it thru a onkyo 1007 and it is fantastic. Brightest projector you will find at this resolution and price range. Plays movies beautifully and games like no other. Handles HD and non hd with ease. I have had it and used it for 1800 hours so far and the bulbs are good for 4000 but just like a light bulb they can go at any time.

A few things people need to know for a long life span is

1. Do not turn on if your only gonna use it an hour or less.

2 Do not turn off and on the projector shortens life span.

3. Do not use during a thunderstorm ever seen a light bulb glow brighter and then later burn out?

I turn mine on and use it every night for atleast 8 hours a day. I have never had a bulb blow on me ever outta the three I have had. I even went over the lifespan on my second one buy 1800 hours!!

Bulbs go bad usually in the first 100 hours if they are gonna prematurely go unless you do what I said not to above. I have it on a 120" screen and I could not be happier.

Also if they give you a replacement bulb make sure you use it, after your first bulb has 100 hours on it use the second for 100 hours

1 Its the right bulb :P

2 It will make it past the 100 hour mark.

Also just so ya know how long and I do have it I was the first to have this projector and reviewed it on AVS forum you can see it here.

[...]

Hope this helps thanks :)

"I'm a Projector Newbie, so, easily impressed - but I LOVE it!" 2010-06-01
By Mike Scher (Barcelona, Spain)
I received my Mitsubishi HC3800 projector approximately one month ago. I hung it from the ceiling as soon as possible and have been blown away by the results ever since. I have to admit that I upgraded from an tube TV, so I am easily impressed. I was originally going to get a plasma tv, but after some research it became obvious that for my intended use (watching movies in a dark room), a projector was the way to go. I looked at all of the reviews and settled on this projector. I know I could have gotten blacker blacks and other advantages, but not at this price. I also got the projector during the bulb rebate offer which brings the price even lower. So, pound for pound, I considered this projector to be the best bang for the buck.

I have not been disappointed and neither has anyone who has seen it. I also have not seen ANY of the problems which some of the other commenter's have mentioned. The only small complaint that I have is that the projector is mounted directly above our heads and there is a noticeable noise (which I assume is fan noise) when there is little or no sound from whatever we are watching.

I got the projector from Electonics Expo via Amazon and the service was as it should be - brand new unopened item delivered on time with no problems/hidden charges.

I pride myself in being a cheap-skate and am proud of the fact that I saved a fortune on cables and the mounting bracket by shopping very carefully.

"Awesome Projector - but has to be replaced..." 2010-05-10
By Feeling English (Urbandale, IA)
I'll preface by stating I've only watched one movie on it so far. But what I've seen I'm duly impressed!

The body has a very simple glossy black look to it. The remote is easy to use, and the menu system has a low learning curve on figuring out.

The projector is small -- I guess -- by 1080P standards, but does have some weight to it.

Booting up takes about 15 secs (guessing) before you get a picture image. The noise level varies alot with this projector depending on the signal that's being fed to it. Since this is a DLP, it uses a color wheel.

In a quiet room the color wheel can make a metallic spinning sound that can be heard when fed a video signal of 60 fps -- default for DVD and lower type of signals. It's nothing noticeable when playing a movie, but you will notice it before the movie starts.

However that also depends on where you sit. Depending on the location to where you sit in relation to the projector, you may not hear it at all. I've also heard from AVS Forum people that the color wheel sound

goes down after about a 100 hrs of use as the projector goes through it's early use phase.

On the other hand, if your Blu-ray player can convert your signal to 24P, or if the blu-ray movie is formatted to play as such, you won't hear a thing! Let me repeat that. You won't hear A THING! That's because the color wheel slows down to accommodate the 24 fps signal. (Though some people may be more susceptible to rainbow effects with the slower spin.)

Also the projector is VERY QUIET (in low lamp mode) for fan noise. I had an Infocus 4805 before, and it was much more noticeable with fan noise. DLP's have a reputation of being louder than the comparable LCD projector. But I would wager this isn't outputting more than 25 decibels of fan noise, and in my sound-insulated room with NO audio playing, I barely registered the projector was running.

I should note I have only 7 1/2 ft ceilings, and this is ceiling mounted. I had to use just a 3 + keystone effect to adjust the trapezoid shape of tilting my projector up. (You can find a really nice aluminum ceiling mount for cheap on a certain other famous selling website.)

Out of the box image quality is excellent! I haven't done any major tweaking of the image, and I register it's fairly close to D65 color in low lamp moade, Cinema gamma, and Medium temp.

I will note that sometimes I get a "no image" message as the Blu-ray player boots up the disc, or if a it's a lag from previews to main menu on the disc. I hear this is fairly commone thing, and I don't know if that's due to the projector losing it's signal, or the fact I have a 15 ft HDMI run to my player.

I have yet to see this happen while playing a movie. All in all, if you're wanting to finally get 1080P sweetness at a reasonable price, get this projector!

Note - I do favor DLP technology over LCD when it comes to projectors, but if this projector had been crap, I would've said so.)

After only 3 hrs of use, I got a faulty image that required me to restart it. Contacting Mits Support, they tell me it's a "board issue" and the projector needs to be replaced."

On a VERY positive spot, before I even got my DOA Case # from Mits, after talking with Amazon support, they have ALREADY sent out a new projector for me! What a surprise! I might get it tomorrow. Just hoping this 2nd projector isn't a lemon like the first one.

Kudos to Amazon for giving me such good customer service!

I really do think this is the best 1080P projector for the sub [...] category, it's just a shame I've read about many users getting lemon projectors the first time out. (Not necessarily from Amazon, just in general.)

"Mitsubishi HC3800 is well worth the money!" 2010-04-26
By Buddy Davis (Standford, CA)
I purchased this to replace an Infocus X1 when the bulb burnt out. I was looking at the Mitsubishi HC3800 and the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8100. It was a hard decision to make. I decided to go with the DLP over the LCD since I had such great luck with the Infocus DLP. I was afraid if it would be bright enough since I have a 150 year old home that was not designed for electricity let alone a home theater. I am very pleased with the brightness of the projector. I can see the screen even in the day time. Attached it to an Apple TV, iMac, and an over the air HDTV converter. All work extremely well with the Mistsubishi HC3800. It's currently sitting on a table top but will ceiling mount it when the mount arrives. I would buy it again. It's only short fall is that it has only one HDMI port, I wish it had more. But I guess it will go through the home theater system anyway, so not a big deal.

 "Returned after two days" 2010-04-19
By Hank
After calibration, I was not satisfied with the color presentation of this projector. Neither was I happy with the particular projector I received from Amazon. It had obviously been opened and repacked as evidenced by the two layers of tape on the cardboard carton and the poorly applied plastic protective covering on the projector. It appears to have been one that was a return and sent out again as NEW. It came from Amazaon and not a third party. The serial number was 14xx when other suppliers were shipping projectors with 12xxx serial numbers. This model projector had problems from the start and continues to do so with unexplained shutdowns and is very sensitive to what kind of hdmi signal it receives causing synching problems.

Even though it was a defective unit, Amazon did NOT refund the return shipping which cost me $34.00.

"great for classroom...and at home" 2010-03-08
By Mouse (chicago)
I bought this almost two years ago, primarily to use in my school classroom. I was tired of trying to reserve the single projector available for the entire department--it could never be found. Like most teachers, I spend a lot of my own money on school supplies. This was a great bargain, and has made life much easier. I can now prepare wonderful presentations for my students, and project an image large enough for everyone in the class to easily see. It has really enhanced my ability to teach complex topics in biology. I can supplement with animation, short video clips, powerpoint, and assign student presentations with audio and video.

During breaks, I use this at home to make photo slide shows on the wall during parties, and to watch movies.

Not a high end projector, but then since I am hauling it around a lot and there is a risk of theft at our school, I don't want to invest a ton of money. It has been reliable and easy to use with both my mac and pc laptops. While I have used many projectors, this is the first projector that I have owned as my own personal property and I am very happy with it.

 "It's a snap!" 2010-05-05
By Easy Money (California)
When my lamp blew, I did the online search and found this to be the best price with the best rankings. The product arrived in 3 days, from coast to coast, and that was standard shipping. Ordered the bulb only, as I still have my Sony owners manual which gave step by step instructions with pictures. Took about 15 min. from start to finish, included reading, gathering tools, and sliding my 60" TV from the wall and back. The picture is much brighter with the Phillips bulb! Save money and do it yourself. Oh, yea, and I'm a girl :)

 "Excellent Bulb" 2010-04-28

Fast shipping. This bulb is brighter and will last longer than OSRAM which only lasted 3-4 months. I will always buy Phillips from now on.

"Quick delivery! and a bonus!" 2010-02-01

The lamp arrived very fast and to my surprise the lamp came with the housing which wasn't in the picture. I didn't have to go through taking off my old housing and installing on the new lamp. Took me less than 5 minutes to install the new bulb. Excellent service. I will definitely buy from this seller again.

 "Works good." 2010-01-12

I wasnt sure or not to buy a replacement lamp for my tv that was not in a housing, since I have seen most of the ones for sale come with housings. I did not know if you could take the old housings apart, but I orderd the lamp anyway and It came quick. When I took the housing out of my tv I discovered that the housing comes apart all I needed was a #1 phillips screw driver and a small cresent wrench. Lamp was easy to replace and works just fine.

 "Something to think about" 2009-12-23
By Gary P (Geneva, Illinois USA)
I purchased this lamp for my Sony when the screen said the bulb was near the end of it's life. I think there is just some sort of timer on the set that says "The end is near" after about 4 years of use. It takes about 5 minutes to replace the bulb after a 1 hour cooldown. I purchased the bulb inside a housing and when I removed the old bulb and housing I did not see any easy way of replacing the bulb in the housing. I kept the old bulb and housing so that when it nears the end next time I will examine it more carefully but I would recommend for the DIYer that you buy it with a housing for the first time. The set and bulb are too expensive to mess with when you are in a hurry to get the set back up. SONY XL-5200 LAMP WITH HOUSING
